چکیده

The instruments which have been used heretofore for the observation of nerve action currents have been galvanometers of the moving coil or magnet type with or without the aid of a rheotome, the capillary electrometer and the string galvanometer. Each of these instruments possesses considerable inertia. The slower galvanometers are unaffected by single action currents and give a sustained deflection when the action currents are monophasic and rapidly repeated. The size of the deflection is the mean value of the individual waves which in turn depends upon their shape and the rate at which they are repeated. As the former is not known the deflections are mainly of qualitative significance. All of these instruments are governed by the laws of forced vibration with damping. The differential equation expressing this law is

Electric Impedance of the Squid Giant Axon during Activity

Alternating current impedance measurements have been made over a wide frequency range on the giant axon from the stellar nerve of the squid, Loligo pealii, during the passage of a nerve impulse. The transverse impedance was measured between narrow electrodes on either side of the axon with a Wheatstone bridge having an amplifier and cathode ray oscillograph for detector. When the bridge was bal...

The use of the South African frog (Xenopus laevis) in the study of spinal reflex physiology.

Frogs have been valuable as test animals in neurophysiological and related investigations for many centuries. Basic facts discovered by means of frog preparations include the existence of animal electricity (Galvani, 1791), the anatomical basis of a reflex arc (Hall, 1850), the speed of nerve impulse conduction (Helmholtz, 1850), the inhibition exercised by brain centres on the cord (Sechenov, ...

Effects of Odontobuthus Doriae Scorpion Venom on Mouse Sciatic Nerve

Temporary paralysis is a rare manifestation of envenoming following the yellow Iranian scorpion, Odontobuthus doriae (O. doriae). Thus, to elucidate the underlying mechanism, we investigated the neurotoxic effect of venom in the sciatic nerve, the possible mechanism in a mice model. The neurotoxicity and temperature effects in the venom-induced neurotoxicity were examined using the mouse sciati...

An electronic phonocardiograph employing a double-beam cathode-ray oscillograph as the recording device.

A phonocardiograph employing a cathode-ray tube is the theoretical ideal since the natural frequency of the instrument is sufficiently high to avoid distortion of the vibrations to be recorded, the amplitude of the deflections is directly proportional to the movements which excite them, and the cathode-ray beam has minimal inertia and is fully damped. With any of the popular recording devices i...

The Action Potential in Fibers of Slow Conduc- Tion in Spinal Roots and Somatic Nerves

The conducted action potential of mixed somatic nerve when recorded, after amplification, by the cathode ray oscillograph exhibits waves, the more constant and prominent of which, for the sake of convenience, have been designated alpha, beta, gamma and delta’ in the order of their n signated appearance (Erlanger, Gasser and Bishop, 1924). These waves have l i always been confluent, with the exc...
